AI training for building designers and drafting practices
The drawing is not the deliverable people argue about. The documentation around it is.
The work that eats the week
Every track starts from a task list, not a curriculum. This is the list for building design and drafting, with the tool we’d reach for on each one. If three of these are yours, the training has something to work on.
| Task | Tool |
|---|---|
| Design briefs written up from a client meeting The document that decides whether the first concept lands or wastes a fortnight. | Claude |
| Planning and DA supporting statements Long, structured, council-specific documents assembled from the same parts each time. | Claude |
| Reading a planning instrument or DCP Two hundred pages you need the six relevant controls from, against your own checklist. | Claude |
| Client correspondence through revisions Managing expectations in writing across a long project. | ChatGPT |
| Specifications and schedules Repetitive documentation that is expensive to get inconsistent. | Claude |
| Fee proposals and scope letters The document that decides the job, written after hours. | Claude |
| Anything requiring certification or engineering On the never list. Structural, fire and compliance certification stay with the qualified person. | Neither |
Tool choice here is a starting point, not a rule — see which tool for which job for the reasoning.
Where the line sits
The competence line. Compliance assessment against the NCC, structural adequacy and certification are not drafting. A confident paragraph from a tool is not a check, and the practice carries the liability.
The planning line. Planning controls are read at the source. The tool helps you work through a document you have open; it does not remember your council's DCP.
The highest-value module here is long documents. A practice that can reliably pull the six relevant controls out of a DCP in twenty minutes rather than an afternoon has changed its economics, and nothing about that touches the drawing.
What the training covers
The foundations are the same for every business — roughly seventy per cent of what you need is not industry-specific at all. The order changes, and the examples are all yours.
- Getting output you can actually use
- Building reusable setups
- Working with long documents
- What never goes in
- Writing your team’s AI policy
How it’s usually delivered
For building design and drafting the usual starting shape is a workshop built around long documents. The assessment confirms it against your own answers rather than assuming.
Who’s in the room. The practice principal buys. Designers and drafters are the audience, and the administrator who assembles DA packages gets more out of it than anyone expects.
What you’d have at the end
- A repeatable method for reading a planning instrument against your own checklist
- DA statement components as reusable setups
- Fee proposals drafted in a consistent structure
- A written rule about what stays with the engineer and the certifier
The questions we get asked
Can it do anything with the CAD files?
No. This is about documentation and correspondence, not drafting software.
Will council notice AI-written statements?
They will notice a generic statement, which is a quality problem either way. The setups are built on your own approved submissions.
We're a two-person practice.
Then the workflow build usually beats the workshop — fewer people, more setups built with you.
Regulatory context
Relevant bodies and frameworks: state planning legislation and local planning instruments, the National Construction Code, state building designer and architect registration bodies, and Building Designers Association bodies.
Compliance content on this vertical should be reviewed by a qualified adviser before publication. We name no CPD hour figures anywhere on this site — requirements differ by body and by state, and an out-of-date number is worse than none.
