AI training for Australian law firms and conveyancers
Your staff are already using AI, usually on a free tier, usually unreported.
The work that eats the week
Every track starts from a task list, not a curriculum. This is the list for legal support & conveyancing, with the tool we'd reach for on each one. If three of these are yours, the training has something to work on.
| Task | Tool |
|---|---|
| Summarising a long contract or document bundle Hundreds of pages where the question is narrow and the reading is not. | Claude |
| Client update letters and matter status emails Answering 'where is my matter up to' for the fourth time today. | ChatGPT |
| Precedent and template tidy-ups A precedent bank that has drifted across fifteen years and four people. | Claude |
| File notes and attendance notes Written at the end of a day that already ended, or not written at all. | Claude |
| Searches, settlement and checklist admin Process work where a missed step is the whole problem. | Claude |
| Anything that becomes advice to a client On the never list without qualification. | Neither |
Tool choice here is a starting point, not a rule — see which tool for which job for the reasoning.
Where the line sits
Matter detail does not go into a free account. The difference between the free and paid terms is the whole question, and most staff have never read either.
The boundary we teach
Nothing that becomes advice to a client. No citations, authorities or case references relied on without verification.
Your staff are already using AI, usually on a free tier, usually unreported. The principal's real question is not what productivity is available, it is how exposed the firm is right now. So the first engagement is an audit and a policy in your words, not a course.
The family-level rule for legal & professional services: Matter detail does not go into a free account. The gap between free and paid terms is the whole question, and most staff have never read either.
What the training covers
The foundations are the same for every business — roughly seventy per cent of what you need is not industry-specific at all. The order changes, and the examples are all yours.
- Working with long documents
- Building reusable setups
- Getting output you can actually use
- What never goes in
- Writing your team's AI policy
How it's usually delivered
For legal support & conveyancing the usual starting shape is AI policy & audit. The assessment confirms it against your own answers rather than assuming.
Who's in the room. Principal buys and carries the risk. Paralegals, conveyancers and support staff are the audience.
What you'd have at the end
- A firm-wide written rule that existed nowhere before
- A clear picture of what staff were already doing, without a disciplinary process
- Bundle summarising that holds up to a partner's reading
The questions we get asked
The courts are hostile to this.
Courts are hostile to unverified citations and undisclosed use, which is a different thing. The current practice notes in your jurisdiction are the starting material for the policy, not an obstacle to it.
We'd rather just ban it.
A ban you can't enforce is worse than a rule people follow. The audit tells you which one you actually have.
Our PI insurer will have views.
They will, and a written policy is what they will ask to see. Bring them into the scoping conversation.
Regulatory context
Relevant bodies and frameworks: State and territory law societies, Supreme Court practice notes on generative AI, Australian Institute of Conveyancers. Court and regulator guidance on generative AI changes frequently and differs by jurisdiction. Current practice notes are checked before any engagement and the page carries a review date.
We name no CPD hour figures anywhere on this site. Requirements differ by body and by state, and an out-of-date number is worse than none.
